Schools are split into groups and a student from each school has to talk for a short time either for or against the conference theme. Each school would know in advance whether it was a for or against school. At the end, when each student has spoken, the group votes who has won the debate. There is then a knockout competition similar to world cup scenarios until the whole conference is present to listen to the final two contestants who present their argument.
There is also the opportunity to listen to arguments/ideas from the floor leading to a final vote. As well as being an academic exercise it would enable regional, cultural and national ideas about conference themes to be aired and learned about.
