Westfield Independent Day School for girls recently hosted the European Regional Round Square Conference for schools from France, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany and others from across the UK.
The school held the conference as part of its membership to Round Square, an international group of 60 schools sharing the same philosophy of holistic education which offers opportunities for exchanges and international projects.
Every year each Round Square school sends student representatives to a conference which is held at a member school. The theme of each conference is decided by the member school and focuses on a topical subject such as leadership, environmental awareness or service.
The theme of Westfield’s conference was ‘The World in Harmony’ – a reflection on the importance of creativity in education and the impact of the arts on the local community and local environment. As part of the conference, pupils were given a number of inspirational talks including North East author Anne Fine, who gave a personal account of creativity in her own education; Paul Rubinstein, director of Policy, Planning and Communication at Newcastle City Council, who gave the conference a local perspective on how culture can revive a declining local economy and Ed Vaizey, Shadow Minister for Culture, who presented his vision for the future of arts in England.
The pupils from across Europe also took part in artist led workshops at The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art as well as a music event at The Sage which focussed on vocals, signed song and body percussion.
Marion Farndale, headmistress of the school for three to 18 year olds, said: “In our capacity as a Round Square member school we relish the opportunity to host these inspirational conferences. We have had the privilege to host a number of conferences over the years which is testament not only to the school but also to the North East as a whole as it provides such a unique experience for the visiting pupils from across Europe.”
Through its membership of Round Square, Westfield takes pride in its ability to offer students unique excursions which allow them to see the world, helps develop their characters and gives them an opportunity to help others.
During the past few years girls at the school have combined their academic studies with a number of enlightening excursions enabling them to learn about different cultures and customs from Germany to Costa Rica, Thailand, India, South Africa, Kenya, Canada and Australia.
